It’s been quite the privilege to serve as the 2016 President of the Stark County Association of REALTORS®. And one of the best parts was being able to come to you every week or so and share with you my experiences and passion for homeownership.
I love to read and go through hundreds of books a year. It was quite a refreshing change to have the opportunity to write an article each week and try to give some valuable information to our local home buyers and sellers. Coming up with a theme each week was the challenge. Putting the theme into words was the easy part! I touched on many subjects, did a lot of research, and had a lot of fun!
I’m passionate about homes, home ownership, home values, the housing market and what it takes to realize the American Dream. Maybe I put so much emphasis on “home” because of my parents. They didn’t have much when they bought a huge rehab project. Every room needed gutted and started over. My dad was a draftsman and millwright through the day, and a master carpenter every evening. They saved every penny for the next project and I grew up learning how to hammer a nail, paint a wall, fix a light socket and use a table saw. That house became not only a home, but our “home place”. When it came time to sell the property due to the failing health of my parents, I learned another valuable lesson. My folks came to live with me in the home I owned at the time, and the emotional ties I held for the “homeplace” disappeared. In the same fashion, when my husband and I sold our home of 20 years, where we raised our children, I thought I’d miss it or be devastated. The emotional ties were severed and now I am, again, at home.
The bottom line is this…..”home” is not a place, but a perception. It’s wherever you want it to be, it’s defined however you want to define it, it houses whomever you need it to house. It becomes permanent, temporary, far away, close by, large or small, however you need it to be.
My wish for everyone in 2017 is that somewhere, someday or today, you feel at home, be it owned, rented, or otherwise. I hope you derived some enjoyment, tips, information or value from my 2016 articles. My two biggest messages have been and will continue to be that all real estate is local and don’t go into it alone, use a professional REALTOR®. It’s been my pleasure to serve all of you each week.
