WELCOME SPRING!

Writer: Beth CampbellBeth Campbell

As a life-long Ohio and Stark County resident, I love our area and the amenities it brings to us Ohioans. I learned a few more this week! According to recent news articles, Buckeye Chuck (our “state” weathercritter) is 79% accurate when predicting an early spring versus our neighbor, Punxsutawney Phil, who is only 34% accurate! And, the Canton-Massillon area is rated by the Wall Street Journal and Realtor.com as being ranked as the nation’s top housing market! The average listing is $163,000 below the national median!

Many of our children (some of mine included) move to other areas of the country when they become adults, finish their educational goals, etc. The “greener grass on the other side of the fence” is generally the promise and prospect of more opportunities and higher earnings. In many cases, this is true. However, everything is relevant, isn’t it? Higher housing and rental costs, property taxes, utility costs, property taxes and/or fees in general eat away at those higher wages. I truly believe that our local “spending power” is far superior than almost anywhere else in the country. That doesn’t mean we are happy at the cost of things! It just means it could be much worse!

Because our area IS considered a top housing market, it is crucial that our inventory keep up with the demand. Not only are housing developments growing in Stark County, but our population is aging and moving on to other living arrangements more conducive to elderly needs. If you or a loved-one is considering making a change, now is the time to do it. And, if you are ready to purchase, get your lending needs in order and connect with your favorite agent! Don’t be terribly concerned about interest rates, as they are currently within the 40-year average and can move up or down at any time. Once you purchase, your lender can help you determine when to refinance in the future and at what rate.

I love Stark County and all the amenities it provides. We have great schools, lots of attractions, farm life, city life, animals and artists, sports and special events. And if eggs DO go to $10 per dozen, I’ll stop at a farm with a sign that says “eggs for sale” and get me a few dozen. And on a sunny 45 degree day you’ll find me outside cleaning the flower beds or brushing the horses while a Floridian would be bundled up and inside watching old movies! Not only is our cost of living more agreeable, but our “outside” days are more numerous than in the deep south. My Floridian friends and I are still fighting over that statement, but oh well! Happy Spring everyone! It’s coming ‘cause Buckeye Chuck said so!
